The Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of northwest Africa, may seem a world away when looking on a world map, but I’m telling you, it is worth the journey to get there.
With many flights from mainland Europe, the Canary Islands are a breeze to get to. Coming from North America, things get a little trickier with less frequent flights and you’ll definitely need to make a connection. My flight path going to Gran Canaria involved a stopover in Ponta Delgada in the Azores (which was quite the adventure in itself) and on the way back, a stopover in Lisbon, Portugal.

The Canary Islands has so much to offer its visitors, so it was quite shocking to me that many North Americans have never even heard of this Spanish archipelago gem in the Atlantic Ocean.
With a variety of islands to choose from, all with their own unique topography and vibe, delicious cuisine, mind-blowing landscapes and scenery, picturesque villages and friendly laid back locals, the Canary Islands are the perfect destination to consider for your next vacation. Oh, and did I mention that it’s super affordable as well? What’s not to love?
